photos and words by Gabriela Gonzalez
On a fair day with the wind high in beautiful 2nd street, downtown Los Angeles, at a time of half past four in the afternoon, we headed down the sidewalk of a mightier wind belonging to our queen tunnel. I was nervous of this finally going down for me being a fan of the collaboration between Dylan Doren and Kurpow! (William Nemec,), looking back and remembering when Kurpow! came to the famous and grand Echo Park Curiosity Shop (Echo Curio) and caught Dylan Doren playing who at the time was accompanied by Grant Capes, part curator of Echo Curio, and with that William was completely taken back as well and there-in-then, that moment contributed greatly to the inspirations of what his solo work is today. Having camera at hand I could feel it shake in excruciating excitement. I could then see Ryan Pardeiro (Kid Infinity) and Erik Anaya at a clear distance also with gear at hand ready to shoot and indulge unmistakably and beyond. Mermaid (San Diego) arriving not too much after, greeted the scene with such positive rumble and charm. I began to shoot faces and more faces as I allowed my consciousness to come to a close and let my other much better then average senses come into form. With the howling of the echoes of the love in each note, I remember feeling so locked into place with only my eyes and tips to trust. And so trusting them with all my might I continued to move from face to face smoothly to quickly capture everyones first reaction to this idea that Dylan Doren had and at that very moment released such potent chaos and beauty in to the rays of light trying to escape every lining of the passing tunnel. I could breathe in every syllable and then in there it struck me to have double exposure made out: with a Pentax 1000 that my friend Rhea Tepplim (Magick Orchids) had lent to me, I used 400 t-max color film and keeping an f stop between 2.8 and 1.5. While again stricken in a state of aw I began taking my idea further and further and I retracted my film by pulling the lever, then pushing it clock wise three to four and half times or so to make sure that every other picture I took would pare up nicely and stay away from there being a cross direction in the display of the photographs. As Ryan dove slickly and kneeing his way into the heart and brain of this song, I too dove and bumped heads with Dylan and Kurpow and it was the best hurt ever!
Dylan and his voice so slender and piercing at the thought, was so lucid and even freer then ever, at that spot that was so longed for. Kurpow! with every huff, a sound comes out that could live in the hearts forever, sounding so obstruct yet softly displaying his lyrics, together they embellished a performance so profound and strict in its representation of sheer American Art. Every shimmering spot you see in these photographs are all naturally based on my subjects and the true essence of technique was combined that day through out a team of winning visions.
